Picoplanktonics

Picoplanktonics explores the potential of living materials as a new approach to architectural construction. The project investigates how biological systems can be integrated with computational design, robotic fabrication, and material research to create new forms of living architecture.

The project focuses on Synechococcus PCC 7002, a photosynthetic cyanobacterium, which is incorporated into a mineral-based structural system through robotic 3D printing. The resulting structures create an interface between biological processes and architectural fabrication, allowing the material to actively interact with its environment.

Presented at the Canada Pavilion during the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, the project formed a living installation that required controlled environmental conditions, including light, moisture, and warmth, to maintain the activity of the cyanobacteria.

Contribution

As part of the ETH Zurich Research and Development team, Hamid Peiro contributed to the computational design and digital fabrication development of the project. His work focused on connecting computational workflows with robotic fabrication processes and the physical production of the project components.

The project brought together expertise in computational design, robotics, fabrication, biology, and material research to explore alternative approaches to architectural construction based on living and regenerative systems.
